The last (6th) biannual project meeting was organised online in June. The focus of the meetings was on reporting the project outcomes and planning the final dissemination activities.
Project partners of BONUS BASMATI from Aalborg and Aarhus universities will be on stage in the following events:
The marine plan of Denmark and the marine ecosystem services.
The authorities responsible for the marine plan of Denmark presents the processes and stakeholder involvement in Maritime Spatial Planning. The event also introduces the participants to the theoretical background of ecosystem based planning in marine areas. The concept brings focus on the sustainable use of marine ecosystem services and how to address sustainability in practice.

Coastal and marine cultural heritage in the Baltic Sea

Tourism, recreational use and sustainability – how to include the local interests in Maritime Spatial Planning? The event introduces methods and tools for making local interests visible in the planning process.

The integrated ecosystems service assessment approach employed in the Latvian Case study and the Baltic Explorer was presented at a workshop on MSP hosted by the Latvian Institute of Aquatic Ecology and the Latvian Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development on the 20th of February in Riga, Latvia. Representatives from the Latvian national and regional ministries and authorities, as well as NGOs attended the workshop.
The workshop was organised in two parts. Firstly, the participants were introduced to the ecosystems service assessment process, and familiarized with how the result of the assessment can serve as basis for ecosystem-based marine management. Then, the participants were split into two groups for some hands-on experience of using the Baltic Explorer. Employing the interactive, collaborative planning and analysis tools provided by the Baltic Explorer, the participants designated a wind farm development site in the Latvian marine waters.
The fifth biannual project meeting will be hosted by Aalborg University (AAU) and Aarhus University (AU) in Copenhagen, Denmark. The meeting will gather all the project partners from Denmark, Finland, Germany, Latvia, and Sweden to discuss the progress of the BONUS BASMATI project.

The University of Turku and the BONUS BASMATI project will jointly arrange a 5 ECTS PhD level course in Turku, Finland. The course will focus on the evaluation of the ongoing national and international maritime spatial planning initiatives, as well as on the methods and tools related to monitoring and evaluation of maritime spatial plans. Emphasis will be on the similarities and differences among the member states’ approaches in fulfilling the MSP directive’s requirements, and the overall progress within the Baltic Sea region at the moment.
The course will consist of:
- a pre-reading exercise with a written report
- lectures and workshops by MSP experts from several Baltic Sea countries
- practical exercises
- a written final report.

Arhus University conducted a workshop in Copenhagen to discuss WP4 issues. The aim was to reflect on the impact assessment framework developed that build on a combination of a DPSIR approach (driving forces, pressures, state, impact, response) and an ecosystem service approach, and to test how it could be used in different contexts. Presentations and discussions of draft papers and assessment tools building on the framework were organised, and a test of the framework as a communication tool was conducted, as a first step towards the development of a communication tool.
Finnish Geospatial Research Institute (FGI) in the National Land Survey of Finland (NLS) is hosting WP5 and WP6 meeting in Helsinki. The aim of the event is to give room to internal discussions among the project partners. Thursday is reserved for WP5 issues as FGI will present the Baltic Explorer demo. The day will focus on the Baltic Explorer, its future, and its connection to the BONUS BASMATI case studies. Friday is reserved for WP6 discussions, especially focusing on the Latvian case study.
